Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, thousands of his followers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement stepped in and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to take action, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the completion of his term.
