Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Police say they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been placed in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then found multiple other vandalized cars and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials say early analysis show the substance was probably human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no clue as to its source; authorities are not yet aware of any injuries in association with the incident," they stated.
City officials said they were attempting "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the community for details.
A senior political figure stated the vandalism left him stunned and required to be addressed promptly.
"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right terrorist attack in 2020," he posted on a platform, recalling the murder of nine victims by a gunman focusing on individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
